Setting up a brand’s online presence is easy. Building a successful brand is less so. A successful brand requires entrepreneurs to understand who they are, what they stand for and what makes them unique.
Entrepreneurs need to hone this knowledge and use it to create content that makes them stand out. To this end, a panel of toptecheasy.com Business Council members give some practical tips to help fellow entrepreneurs develop their personal brands.
1. Consciously and strategically position your brand
Being aware and strategic in positioning your brand is essential. To create a powerful identity that people won’t forget, you need to thoughtfully compose your visual appearance and high-quality content to convey a solution-focused expert’s perception and gain authority in your niche. – Marilisa Barbieric
2. Offer wisdom on podcasts
Sharing your knowledge and wisdom through podcasts is valuable for your brand. Not only will you get one-on-one powerful connections with the podcast host, but it will also help you become a better leader and speaker. I enjoy interviewing others with software like Zoom and posting them on YouTube and social media. It will have the same effect as if you were a host and your audience learns more about you. – Lisa Caprelli, Unicorn Jazz
3. Develop top talent to be better than yourself
Followership as a leader is one of the best ways to advance your brand as a leader. By bringing top talent, being a good listener and connecting points where others cannot, you gain the ability to attract and develop others better than yourself. It’s about bringing an authentic self—and sharing top talent with others how you’ve helped them succeed—that makes a leadership brand timeless. – Matt Peterson, UnitedHealthcare
4. Share your entire journey
You build your brand when you share what’s really going on in your life, not just the glam shots and wins. People want to see your journey. They also want to see your highs and lows. Talk about things that you find frightening or that you are learning about. The important thing is to focus on things outside of yourself. If you recently failed at something or learned a new skill, share it so others can avoid your mistake. – Sabrina Shafer, Transformation continuum
5. Exaltation and champion for others
Increasing your personal brand sometimes has nothing to do with you – it’s about how you go the extra mile to uplift others and become a trusted resource or champion for people who need support. People will listen more to what you have to say when they know it’s not just about you. – Olga Camargo, FARO Associates MBE
6. Produce valuable pieces on reels and TikTok
The best way to build a personal brand is to produce consistent value pieces on Reels or TikTok. Follow the format of having a hook, then add one to three value points and end with a call to action to follow you for more. Add a link to your profile, which should also have an option to sign up for more. Each video must be less than 60 seconds long to fit on TikTok and Reels. Pushing something out every day. – Bob McIntosh, 3 degrees advice
7. Use your resources to help others
Instead of focusing on building your personal brand, focus on using your time, talents, or resources to help other people. Too many people are entangled in the idea of their own brand in a transactional way. Think of your brand as the sum of the people you can positively influence. Let others keep your horn on the clip. – Hilmon Sorey, ClozeLoop
8. Keep posts in line with your audience
I believe in having the right message that always aligns with your brand and what you are ultimately trying to communicate to your audience. I’ve often seen companies share confusing, unrelated social media posts that aren’t relevant to their brand or message. – Matthew Allen, Five star business advice
9. Find your niche and focus on it
Find a specific topic related to a known issue for businesses or individuals. You should be recognized as: the topic guy, so keep talking about this particular topic. Always try to add value and schedule content regularly, but also be agile enough to find ad hoc topics to talk about, such as hot news or things that are not yet known. – Jerome de Guigne, e-Comas – e-commerce made simple
10. Be authentic when building your brand
Building your personal brand is based on being your authentic self. You need to feel comfortable and do the work to make sure you can be yourself. It is essential to establish connections by providing multiple personal and online resources. Participating in speaking engagements and workshops, writing and creating the visual story of you through a purposeful storytelling process can be very successful in sharing your brand. – Leigh Burgess, Bold Industries Group, Inc.
11. Stick with it and put yourself out there
A personal brand is the result of a combination of authenticity, sharpness and perseverance. So be yourself, have a distinctive and interesting point of view and recognize that it takes time to build a brand. Most people don’t feel comfortable being authentic and tense, and most give up too easily. When you combine the willingness to put yourself out there with the discipline to stick to it, a personal brand can be built. – Scott Brighton, aurea
12. Treat others as you would like to be treated
Know what you stand for and why it matters, and be authentic. You have a personal brand, whether you pay attention to it or not. It’s what people say about you when you’re not in the room. To make sure they say good things, follow the golden rule of treating others the way you want to be treated. The stronger you are for others, the more you build a positive personal brand. – Kevin Coker, Proxima Clinical Research, Inc.
13. Define your unique sales proposal
Being authentic starts with being self-aware. No one knows your brand better than you. To cultivate an authentic brand, it is essential to be able to define your unique selling proposition (USP) and be consistent in your communication. – Marian Evans, Elevate BC Ltd
14. Be consistent with your content
Consistency is key when building a brand, and a personal brand is no different. The more content you consistently post, the more likely people are going to notice you and consume and interact with your content. – Lucie Marchelot Shukla, Straight teeth immediately
15. Be Prepared to Fail
Being focused with tenacity and determination is critical to success in building your brand. Be prepared to fail, because failure defines success – absolute focus with a positive mental attitude is the driving force. Knowing who you are and what you can achieve if you try is like a gun full of ammunition and ready to be released. – Michael Ede, Uplift11 Sport
