As mentioned before, Awer was born in the Kenyan refugee camp of Kakuma in the year 1995. He related that his mother and father moved there from Sudan in 1993/1994. Awer had spent ten years there before moving to Australia.

He described how they used to make footballs from plastic bags, but also from clothes and balloons. If they wanted the ball to bounce, they would tear the fabric and tie it, inflate and tie a balloon, and then play. Awer also spoke about his time in Australia.
