The wire, an independent news outlet based in India, retracted its story accusing Meta of granting special permission to an Indian politician to delete posts on its platforms. The wire alleged Malviya is part of Facebook’s arguably genuine XCheck or crosscheck system that allows certain high-profile users to avoid the platform’s typical moderation policies, which is what allowed him to get away with deleting the post. The outlet said it had evidence to prove it, including screenshots and videos of Instagram’s alleged internal system used by employees.

Meta later said the evidence was fabricated and discovered an account on his Workplace tool that appeared to have been created specifically to The wire‘s claims.
