Work upthe global workplace marketplace that connects businesses to independent talent today unveiled a list of the most in-demand skills organizations will seek from independent professionals in the technology, marketing, customer service, accounting, consulting and design industries by 2023.
Upwork’s list underlines the vital role that highly skilled freelancers continue to play in bridging the most important talent gaps for companies. The demand for skills in full-stack, mobile app and CMS development tops the list, along with content writing, graphic design and customer support.
At a time when organizations face economic uncertainty and an ongoing talent shortage, Upwork’s new data shows the extent to which organizations are turning to highly skilled freelancers to fill key roles. Recent update facts shows that 60 million Americans have engaged in freelance work in the past 12 months, representing 39% of the US workforce – an all-time high.
“We are experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime, tectonic shift in the notion of work, with skilled professionals rethinking what they want from their careers, and gravitating towards the flexibility, autonomy and benefits of freelancing,” said Margaret Lilani, VP of talent solutions at Upwork.
At the same time, she continued, “the uncertain economic climate is forcing companies to explore new solutions to stay competitive, and they are finding unlocked potential in the growing pool of skilled independent professionals.”

- Full stack development
- Development at the front
- Back end development
- Mobile app development
- web design
- Development of e-commerce websites
- UX/UI design
- CMS development
- Manual testing
- Scripting and automation
Skill data comes from the Upwork database and is based on freelancer earnings in the United States from January 1, 2022 to October 31, 2022. Each skill had a minimum of 500 projects with active work during the period. Year-over-year growth was estimated by comparing freelancer revenue in 2022 to freelancer revenue for the same period in 2021.
