The past two weeks. Elon has shown that he only cares about making up for the losses he incurs as a result of breaking his binding obligation to buy Twitter. He chose to enter into that agreement! We are all being dragged through this as a result of the choices he has made.
Elon has shown that his only priority with Twitter users is how to make money. I don’t believe he cares about the human rights activists. the dissidents, our users in non-money regions, and all the other users who have made Twitter the global city square you have all worked so long on and love.
I’ve heard Alex Spiro (current Head of Legal) say that Elon is willing to take a huge risk with regard to this company and its users, because “Elon is sending missiles into space, he is not afraid of the FTC.” I heard another Legal Department leader say that because of the tight (two-week?!) SLAs between product launch > launch, Legal “will have to shift the burden to engineers” to self-certify compliance with FTC requirements and other laws. This will create a huge amount of personal, professional and legal risks for engineers: I expect you will all be pressured by management to make changes that are likely to lead to major incidents.
All this is extremely dangerous for our users. In addition, since the FTC can (and will!) fine Twitter BILLIONS of dollars under the FTC Consent Order, this is extremely damaging to Twitter’s longevity as a platform. Our users deserve so much better than this.
